In the UK, one way in which this special day is celebrated is with a unique event in London’s Westminster Abbey coordinated by the Royal Commonwealth Society. The UK’s largest multi-faith celebration, the Commonwealth Day Observance, is attended by a representative of Her Majesty The Queen along with the Prime Minister of Great Britain, up to 200 other VIPs and more than 1,000 schoolchildren.
Norbury School in Harrow, Middlesex, has children from an astounding 52 of the 54 Commonwealth Countries amongst it’s pupils and so it’s staff and pupils brokered it’s own special day; ‘Norbury Day’ to celebrate our commonwealth heritage.
A selected few of the school’s pupils were invited to attend Westminster Abbey in celebration, and the rest joined together to commemorate this special day with events and projects throughout the school.
Harrow Community Radio came along to record an audio history of the school in it’s celebration. Of 2 hours of recordings, HCR have posted around 18 minutes of the event and we hope that you enjoy listening to the audio as much as we enjoyed recording it.
