Two hugely dramatic late goals saw Wealdstone come from behind to secure the most unlikely of victories against ten man Concord Rangers to fully maintain their Ryman League title challenge.

On a memorable night of tempestuousness, incident and high drama at The Vale, it appeared all but inevitable that Wealdstone were heading for a disastrous defeat against a Concord side that had been down to ten men following the controversial first half dismissal of Leon McKenzie.

Despite the sending off, Rangers were undoubtedly the best side for most of the evening and took a deserved lead in the 70th minute through James White.

But just when it looked like Stones were going to taste a gut wrenching defeat at home in the league for only the third time this season, Esmond James smashed home the equaliser with two minutes left to play before Tom Pett dramatically snatched the unlikeliest of victories with a brilliantly cool finish in the third minute of injury time, sparking scenes of wild celebration amongst the home fans in the 610 crowd.

There was just the one change from the side which had performed so well in the victory over Margate two days before, with Scott McCubbin coming in at right back in place of James Hammond who was on the bench.

The first chance of the evening came for Wealdstone with four minutes on the clock as they looked to carry on where they’d left off on Tuesday. Lee Chappell embarked on a trademark surging run down the left before picking out Scott McGleish in the box whose shot on the turn was blocked by Nicky Cowley.

Concord then had a glorious chance at the other end three minutes later. Darren Locke’s clumsy challenge on the corner of the box resulted in a free kick for the visitors, with Tony Stokes’s delivery finding John Easterford who hit a powerful effort off the post. The danger wasn’t over yet though, and Leon McKenzie followed up with another vicious effort which was heroically headed off the line by Chappell.

James White and Ben Greenhalgh then tried their luck with efforts from just outside the box, with both players firing within inches of the right hand post with Jonathan North struggling to get across.

The visitors were then reduced to ten men in controversial circumstances on 24 minutes, with Leon McKenzie red carded for an alleged head butt on Sean Cronin.

Following the sending off Rangers adapted well and were beginning to frustrate Wealdstone as they struggled to play their usual quick passing game baulked by the organisation and high work rate of the opposition.

Stones had their best chance of the evening so far four minutes before the break when Scott McCubbin picked out Peter Dean in the box who flashed a header just wide from six yards when he should have scored.

The second half almost got off to the worst possible start for Stones when on 47 minutes a long throw into the box was headed goalwards by White, with North diving at full stretch to palm the ball away.

Greenhalgh then had a great chance five minutes later, picking up the ball on the corner of the box before cutting inside and hitting a swerving effort which North did fantastically well to parry away.

North excelled again one minute later when another dangerous free kick into the box was headed goalwards by Matthew Fry, but the former Watford man was equal to his effort as he tipped it over the bar.

It looked like a goal had been coming for the visitors and it duly arrived on 70 minutes. Greenhalgh played a high ball into the box from a free kick with White meeting it with a looping header which went over North and into the net.

Stones were struggling to create any real chances on what was turning out be an increasingly frustrating night for them against a very impressive and physically powerful Concord side.

Scott McGleish had a chance with ten minutes left on the clock, hitting a shot on the turn from Scott McCubbin’s pullback which was deflected wide.

From the resultant corner the ball was half cleared as far as Dyer, but he could only curl his shot wide of the post.

The dramatic equaliser came on 88 minutes. Chappell showed his usual superb work rate as he tirelessly chased a lost cause and won a corner. He swung the resultant set piece into the area which flew over everyone and found Esmond James on the far corner of the box. James then showed great composure to rifle the ball home much to the delight of players and fans alike.

The remaining minutes were a frenetic affair as Stones desperately tried to snatch the unlikeliest of victories as Concord became increasingly pressurised and rattled.

And the unthinkable happened in the third minute of stoppage time as Stones won it. McCubbin threaded a great through ball to Pett who chested the ball with wonderful control before lofting it over Concord ‘keeper Dale Brighty to send the home fans into delirium.

So a memorable night for Wealdstone who can now look forward to a just as important trip to Wingate and Finchley on Saturday before Easter Monday’s much anticipated local derby with Harrow Borough at The Vale, 3pm kick off.

Wealdstone: North, McCubbin, Chappell (c), Locke (Godfrey 71), Cronin, Dyer, Webb (James 57), Brooks (Hammond 60), McGleish, Dean, Pett. Subs not used: Jolly, Banks

Attendance: 610

Man of the match: Lee Chappell

Report by Stuart Warren

Do you think you know about Organ Donation? Well think again. All the major religions in the UK support the principles of organ donation and transplantation. These include Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism. 25% of people waiting for organ transplants are from the African Caribbean and Asian communities, Yet less than 2% of the people on the organ donor register are from these communities.

Organ transplants are more successful if the donor and recipient have the same ethnic origin. As a result black and Asian people may wait three times as long as a white person for a kidney transplant.

Wealdstone bravely kept their title hopes alive on Saturday as they came from
behind to earn a precious point at league leaders Whitehawk .

With Stones sitting in second place, seven points behind The Hawks
with two games in hand, it was imperative that they avoided defeat
against the big spending Sussex side if they were to maintain their
hopes of automatic promotion.

And things looked bleak for a time as Stones fell behind to a first
half strike from Hakeem Araba, but a much improved second half performance saw them deservedly find an equaliser through Alex Dyer before both sides were reduced to ten men late on in a tense and exciting finale.

Spurred on throughout by over 300 visiting fans that made the trip to the south coast, it was Wealdstone who had the first opportunity of the
afternoon with two minutes on the clock. Lee Chappell embarked on a
trademark surging run down the left hand side before swinging in a
vicious cross which just evaded the onrushing Richard Jolly before
finding its way to Kurtney Brooks at the far post. Brooks had time to
take a touch before firing an effort just past the wrong side of the post.

The home side spurned an opportunity to open the scoring on 13 minutes
when James Fraser whipped in a dangerous free kick which was met by the powerful Araba whose towering header flew just wide of the upright.

Danny Mills then wasted another good chance five minutes later; firing
over from close range after Rikki Banks failed to clear Fraser’s
corner.

Whitehawk took the lead with 25 minutes on the clock. Wealdstone
failed to clear their lines properly from a near post corner, with a
goalmouth scramble ensuing which gave Araba the opportunity to stab
the ball home from close range.

Stones were struggling to get the ball down and play their usual
passing game on a large undulating surface in what was turning out to be a frustrating opening 45 minutes for the visitors; although they did create a chance five minutes before the break when Peter Dean made space for himself just outside the box before letting fly with a left footed effort which was
beaten away by Chris Winterton in the Whitehawk goal.

Wealdstone looked brighter at the start of the second half,
with Chris O’Leary heading wide from Lee Chappell’s free kick before
Winterton had to be alert to save a driven free kick from Chappell
after Dyer had been pulled back 25 yards from goal.

Wes Parker came close to continuing his recent impressive goal scoring
form on the hour mark, meeting Jolly’ cross with a powerful header
which was tipped over the bar by Winterton.

Despite Stones now dominating possession, Whitehawk were still a
threat on the counter attack and Araba perhaps should have doubled his
side’s advantage on 65 minutes when he ran clear of the Wealdstone
defence, however he could only fire well over when one on one with
Banks.

Raphael Rossi-Branco then embarked on a surging 50 yard run five
minutes later, but like Araba he could only fire well over and the opportunity was lost.

The equaliser for Stones finally arrived on 75 minutes and what a beauty it was for the visiting fans to celebrate. Alex Dyer picked up the ball
20 yards out on the left hand side before cutting inside and letting
fly with an effort from the edge of the box which flew into the far
corner giving Winterton no chance.

Two minutes after the goal Stones were reduced to ten men when
substitute Chris Moore, who had only been on the pitch for three
minutes, was shown a straight red for a late lunge on Whitehawk centre
back Matt Lawrence.

The home side then had a man sent off themselves three minutes later
in what was turning out to be a feisty and controversial end to the game. Mark Knee got involved in a spat with Stones substitute Nathan Webb, with the
Whitehawk man appearing to strike Webb in the face giving referee Gary
Parsons no option but to show Knee a straight red.

The final ten minutes were extremely tense as the highly impressive Wealdstone support raised the volume in an attempt to lift their side to a winner.

Stones carved out a couple of half chances late on, with Chappell
using his long throw to good effect as the home side desperately clung
on for a point and they were able to see out the match after 4 minutes of added time.

Next up for Wealdstone is a trip to Thurrock on Wednesday, before they
entertain Concord Rangers at The Vale next Saturday, 3pm kick off.

Wealdstone: Banks, McCubbin, Chappell, Parker (c), Cronin, Dyer,
Brooks (James 90), O’Leary, Dean (Moore 74), Jolly, Pett (Webb 71).
Subs not used: Godfrey, Locke

Attendance: 587 (320 Wealdstone)
